Polished Kambaba Jasper Freeform

Kambaba Jasper is one of those minerals with a few cool nicknames. Also known as Crocodile Jasper and Monster Jasper, Kambaba Jasper is not only extremely pretty but it fits the nicknames like a glove. The deep greens, the somewhat reptilian yellows and black spots just scream with Lake Placide energy. For those of you who don’t watch bad 90’s horror movies, Lake Placide is about a giant crocodile that lives in a small mountain side lake. You don’t need to have seen the movie to enjoy this stone.
Anyways, with that tangent out of the way, what is this stuff? Well, it is actually made from fossilized algae called stromatolites, some of the oldest known life forms on Earth. These are dated to be over 3 billion years old. The dark green background is interspersed with black orbs and swirls, giving it a marbled, almost “cosmic” look. Even though it’s called “jasper,” it’s technically a type of sedimentary stone rather than true jasper. The patterns you see are natural formations of the fossilized algae from a time when our planet was in its primordial phase. Yes Mom, it was just a phase. Really, it could be slotted into the fossil category but it’s more widely seen as a jasper to the broader audience.
Once you know what you’re looking at, it’s really hard not to fall in love with it. It’s not often that you can hold something in your hand that goes back billions of years and is old compared to even dinosaurs.
